Registered: 7/2/2004 | posted: 6/18/2005 at 7:32:02 PM ET I know this is totally off the subject of music, but does anyone know how to get rid of a wolf fly? My kitten has a larvae of one stuck in it's neck, and my parents won't take her to the vet. Please, if you know how, tell me immediately. She's having trouble breathing!

And, what the hell is a Wolf Fly?
I thought we Aussies held the record for deadly beasts, paralysis ticks (one of which killed a German Shepard I had a few years back) huge spiders, baby-eating dingos and sharks on amphetamines but a Wolf Fly sounds very nasty indeed.

Registered: 7/2/2004 | posted: 6/19/2005 at 4:09:37 AM ET They won't take her to the vet because if they do, then they would also have to buy shots, and they don't want to spend that kind of money. A wolf fly is just a kind of fly that lays eggs on sick animals, and it's eggs hatch and burrow into the skin. I guess it wouldn't be that bad, but it's in her neck, and it could cut off her circulation. This kitten also finally came up to me. It's mother is sweet, but the kittens are wild, and I think she only let me pick her up and start petting her because she was too sick to care anymore. My mom says that I have to wait 'till the larvae mature and start coming out, and then I would have to pull them out with forceps, and that's only if she lives that long. I hope so. Thanks for the support

I can understand your feelings, WF, there is nothing more sad than to see a kitten in trouble( we have three cats here), and it doesn't get easier as you get older, either. Maybe your Mum is right, though..it would have to be over the main artery in it's neck to cut off the circulation.
Either way, it's a tough time for you.

I'm sorry that your kitten is not up to par. It's a shame that your parents won't take your pet to the vet.
Wish I could offer you some help, but I've never had a pet and I thought that the website might have info that would help you. There might be a volunteer vet in your area where there is no cost or minimal cost. Just some ideas. Keep in touch, I'm with Pete, it must be difficult to sit by and watch your kitten and not be able to help.

Registered: 7/2/2004 | posted: 6/22/2005 at 12:34:06 AM ET Good news everyone! The dogs were all barking outside, so I went to check, and they were around these lockers outside that we keep tools in. Once I warded them off, the kitten was underneath with a ton of little flies surrounding her, so I took her in. It took just a couple minutes, but I managed to pull out the wolf fly in her neck with forceps. She has a medium-sized hole in her neck, and still has problems breathing, but at least now she'll be able to heal. I gave her a bath, and when I put her to bed, she started trying desperately to get out of the carrier. I took her out, and the other wolf fly that was in her cheek, swelling and infecting the area of the eyeball, was IN HER EYE!! I was sort of glad though, because the tissue around the eyeball was too delicate to put pressure on it, so I would have had to wait for the larvae to come out on its own. I got the forceps and pulled that one out, and put triple antibiotic on all her wounds. She still has one wolf fly in her neck , but I put her to bed, and she's sleeping right now. At least I got two out!
