Neonatal screening, also called "newborn screening," is the process of examining newborns within the first few days of their lives to look for metabolic problems and other conditions that might make it hard for the baby to grow and develop normally. These conditions aren't obvious when the baby is born, but they could hurt the child's brain, sense of touch, and health for life. When these disorders are found early on, the right treatments can be started, which can help avoid problems that might come up in the long run.
