The film Thelma and Louise is written by Callie Khouri and directed by Ridley Scott in 1991. The most significant actors are Susan Sarandon (Louise Sawyer) and Geena Davis (Thelma Dickinson) who play in a perfect way. Before watching the first scene of the film, I have expected that such a famous director and well-known actors had to contribute to the creation of the plot based on adventure and lifes journey.
The most incredible thing, which stands out most to me, is the last episode when friends kiss each other, which, in fact, means their final farewell as they are going to die to gain freedom forever. There is no convincing evidence of their death. Nonetheless, it is quite understandable that their life is over.
I think that the film focuses on the womens desire to oppose men for the sake of freedom, which motivates them to commit crimes while trying to protect themselves. Moreover, friendship also plays a vital role as women are ready to sacrifice their lives to be free.
The major conflict of the film is based on the irony of life as Thelma and Louise just want to travel to feel life. However, unfortunately, their journey leads them to the deadlock. Unexpectedly, Louise kills a man who tries to rape Thelma, and, consequently, this case changes the life of each of them.
One of the important scenes, which emphasize the primary theme, relates to the case when Thelma robs the shop for the sake of their sincere friendship. She knows that it is her fault that J. D. robbed them, and that is why she becomes a robber as well.
I was surprised by J. D.s deed as firstly he had sex with Thelma and then he merely stole all the money. I just do not understand how a man can make such things when he has close relationships. This fact proves that some people have neither moral nor spiritual values, and money is their driving force to rob and kill.
The portrayal of irony is considered to be different here as it has much in common with the paradox of life. In this case, irony covers the whole plot, and a meeting with J. D. is a good example of it as being a thief, he makes Thelma trust him through sex, and then he merely steals Louises savings.
I suppose that Louise is a clear hero of the story because she managed to protect Thelma from sexual abuse. Besides, once Louise became a victim of the rape but she has never mentioned it. Undoubtedly, one may notice that she made considerable efforts to find a basic solution how to save their lives.
As for me, after watching this film, I was confused and sad at the same time as both protagonists deserved to live despite the fact that they broke the law. I hoped they would survive, and after the last scene, I could not believe that everything was over. On the other hand, I realize that the story reveals that being sincere friends, women decide to die to gain eternal freedom.
The point is that the film represents an American drama but it differs from other typical stories of this genre due to its gradual tension, which does not give any precise answer as for the end of the story. Although the audience may think almost to the end that there will be a particular way to run away from the police, everything happens according to drama.
