People may not take the harmonica seriously perhaps because it is marketed as a toy. Just look in your local dollar store. You can pick up a cheap harmonica for your little one to blow on and make noise with. Perhaps it is THAT image that stays with people.
As a fan of all different kinds of music, I don't have a problem with the harmonica. I admire anyone who is able to play no matter what the instrument. I think you care too much about what others think or say about the harmonica. What do you care? As long as it stirs your soul that's all that really matters now isn't it?
I am learning how to play the guitar. Believe me when I say that I have had my fair share of rude comments made to me about the guitar and my desire to play it. I am a 41 year old mother of 2. Me and my guitar don't fit the average person's expectations of what a guitar player should be and people don't mind tellin' me. That is human nature though. We can't change the way people think.
So we have to make a choice. We can either quit because others just don't get it, or we can suck it up and carry on doing what we like regardless of what others think.
Worry about the things you can control not about the things you can't.
Good luck and happy playing.

I don't think harmonica has a poor image, it is just not well known. Where teenagers have parents who listem to blues, of course, it is familiar to them, and the combination of harmonica and guitar appeals to almost everyone, in almost any culture, I find.
The technique called "'cross harp"', where the key of the harp used is matched to the sub-dominant of the key the guitar plays in is easy to play in it's basic form and lots of fun to play, as well.
Here's an interesting cultural combination example involving harmonica: I have a class of Australian Aboriginal and Fijian teenagers at the moment doing Blues Harp in half the class and guitar in the other. They love harmonica and most can improvise great solos on either instrument.
At the moment we are working on a harp solo for "'People Get Ready"" with A Cappella vocals.....
Toonz, at 41 you are a mere stripling..I regularly have private guitar students in their 60's and 70's, I have one lady 74 at the moment learning ""Summertime"", from Porgy and Bess as a guitar solo

Thanks for the support Pete.
"Stripling" indeed. Not a common Canadian term but appreciated none the less. Just as long as people don't think I've taken on some sort of questionable employment. We Canadians are very up tight about that kind of thing you know. I will value your words of wisdom.

"'Out Of The Arms Of Babes And Striplings" is either a biblical term, or a quirk of Antipodean humor.
Perhaps those convict genes are to blame? Far too tight in a hot climate, of course.

Well, its just that I play the diatonic harp on jazz and no matter how good I am none of the schools will see it as a "proper" insturment. Well, let people think what they want to think. Im going to play anyways and study on my own.
