It’s Greek recruitment season again. Sororities have been at it since, well, sometime in the B.C. it feels like, but for my active fratsmen on campus this fall, fraternity bro-flirt is in full swing as well. Godspeed, my friends, may the house with the greatest chill-to-pull ratio win.

This article isn’t for them though.

This post is for every guy or lady looking at Greek Life this fall. You don’t think now where to buy essay online cheap . I speak from the perspective of a four-year Greek Life veteran and former fraternity president. This one’s for the prospective brother (or sister) a.k.a. the not-so-freshmen who are looking at skinny-dipping into the pond of Greek Life.

Most schools have started or are getting started. The process of getting your feet (or whatever) wet has begun. Many of you have attended your first frat parties and become enamored with the lifestyle.

Now the choice: do you want more than arms-length partying or are you looking for something deeper, like inclusion, pride and service? For some, the answer’s easy: no way. Being in Greek Life comes with expectations, responsibilities and stereotypes. To put it another way: baggage.

But I’d wager you wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t interested in the other perspective: to be a part of something big, impactful and flat-out badass.

Obviously, I come from a biased position so let me say something we both know upfront: Greek Life is not for everyone. But for the right person, it can be an alchemic reaction that turns someone into solid gold.

The kind of person best suited for Greek Life is, shockingly, wants to be a member of Greek Life. You can’t compartmentalize it as a hobby. Joining is not such an inconsequential thing. If there is a shred of doubt or worry over being identified with Greek Life, replace that with pride. Find your own reasons why Greek Life is right for you and you will do well.

It all comes down to the relationship between the house and the person. The best way to know if Greek Life is right for you is to fully immerse yourself in opportunities to learn about the community. Every campus is different and every Greek Life is different. Meet the Greeks and recruitment week events are key. The first house you visit is rarely the perfect fit.

I was fortunate to come to my house almost immediately my first night in college. That is not an uncommon experience; most people fall in together very quickly and don’t change course. But it rarely worked out as well for others as it did for me.

For the most part, my fellows fell off as they realized they couldn’t keep up or had chosen wrongly. Sometimes, the person would make a great member but their experience at the wrong house prevents them from seeing things new at a different one. Happens all the time.

Finally, if you do take the plunge, congratulations! Embrace all of it, from the rituals to the alumni to the positions. There is no reason to join Greek Life unless you’re ready and willing to accept what that means and do your best to make your house the greatest.

I’m not saying abandon your individualism and become a mindless cyborg of Greek culture. If you’re not confident enough in your self-concept to reconcile your decision to join a fraternity or sorority with your own values, you probably shouldn’t join. What I am saying is enjoy it! The active life only lasts for the undergraduate period and then exists only as a memory. Make it a good one.

The commitment made pledge night is a lifelong one, one ripe with more fun opportunities than you can imagine. If you strike gold while scouting out your Greek Life options, I advise you to keep digging. I promise there’s always more to be mined.
