I agree it was most likely early man, walking and humming or oo'ing to the rhythym of footsteps, or banging sticks, bones and such, blowing through shells

| posted: 7/13/2007 at 4:32:01 PM ET Surely language, in the sense of communication, first began with the expression of emotions like like sadness, agony (physical and mental), anger, hatred, disgust, and fear. Also surprise. And positive feelings like joy, happiness, and contentment. However, as the needs of a larger community made words necessary to clarify meaning, the original tonal language developed into music.
