Can someone tell me why there are straightlines sometimes connecting the 8th and 16th notes but on other times the connecting bars are squiggly. Does this relate to the notes moving up and down or is there another reason.

Hi,

Take a look at Music Education and look at learn to read music.

Maybe that will help.

In most modern music editions the beams connecting the 8th notes and 16th notes will be straight lines. In some manuscripts that are hand written, including some editions of fake books, the calligraphers shaped the beams to the contour of the note movement. This difference however has no effect on the way the music is to be performed.
