As you can tell from the question I am a total ignoramus trying to learn music. My question is, 'What are the stems on the quaver, crotchet & minim for? Their lengths seem to be all the same. The only differences being the squiggly bit hanging off the quaver and the fact that some hang from the left side of the note and others poke upwards from the right side

go to the main menu (so what is your fancy and click:
learn to read music

then click:
types of notes

The stems are just a kind of musical shorthand to help read music. as far as if the stem goes or down depends on the placement of the note. If the note is below the 3rd line they go up. If the note is above the 3rd line they go down. If the note is ON the 3rd line whatever the next note is usually determines what it will be.

The "squiggly bit" are called flags or beams (depends on who taught you) 1 beam is a 8th note. 2 is a 16th note. 3 is a 32nd note.

Thankyou maintube. It is what I suspected, but didn't get the connection, obvious though it is, to the 3rd line.

No problem. I forgot to add that if there are 2 parts on one score of music the upper parts stem will go up and the lower part will go down.
