thanks for any answers,

I'm a French horn player so can't help you too much with the string issues, but I just wanted to say that even with no music history or theory you will still be able to play. Find yourself a good teacher-->if you have a university around near you, there's a wealth of resources there. I'm myself am a college student and many of my freinds teach lessons for extra money. Students at that level will be able to help you. Just keep your desire to play and practice what you can, and soon you'll be doing just fine!

My recommendation is to stop by your local music store (violin, cello, classical instruments) and ask them to put tapes on for you. They should aslo have listings of teachers there. Also, try contacting your local university, they always have students that are willing to give lessons.

It can be difficult especially if you have thick fingers to play a violin/fiddle given its slim neck profile and fingerboard unless you can get one custom made to fit your fingers, which I am not sure about on a violin/fiddle. For now keep your fingernails well trimmed and develop calluses on the tips of your fingers which will help. You are fingering with the tips of your fingers, correct. If you are still learning on you own I recommend good methods books and a video/s. Here are some helpful links...
