Hi! Is there any significance to which way the lines on the notes (1/2,1/4,1/8,1/16) go - I've noticed that sometimes the line goes up and sometimes it goes down.

Thanks!!

The line is called the stem. Where it is on the staff generally determines if it goes up or down. Below the 3rd line the stem goes up, above the 3rd line the stem goes down. The flow of the melody determines the stem placement of a note ON the 3rd line. If there are 2 sets of notes (duet) the top notes stems will go up and the bottom will go down.

As long as the voices do not cross.
