The new "kid on the block" teaches a Juilliard. He has asked me to start practice times at 12PM. He's a new neighbor (pain in the ***)

I usually start between 10:30AM-11:30AM and have never had any complaints in the almost 5 1/2 years that I've been taking lessons. He's a composer and has sensitive ears, so he tells me. There is a rather large closet with lots of stuff in it behind my piano which does not have a big sound to begin with. How he can hear it at all is beyond me. He said our apartment building isn't soundproof. I've been in this building for many years, it's pre ww 11 and again I don't know what his complaint is. He should try one the new constructions - plasterboard walls.

Today we happened to meet again, he said that he needs quiet - New York is not a quiet City. There is construction going somewhere nearby and that bothers him. Believe it or not he can't understand why they don't start at 12PM.

Than he suggested I study the music away from the piano or something like that and I said I'm not a conservatory student.

Any suggestions? What is he doing living in a noisy city and looking for quiet.

Thanks for reading this long story, it just helps.

Hi suzyq, happy St Pats Day. As long as your rent check isn't addressed to "Mr Julliard", you just carry on with your normal routine. The nerve of some people! What time does Julliard open anyway? He should be at school at that time of day.

I am a fragment of my imagination

Good to hear from you and thanks.

He said that he needs to get away from Juilliard with students practicing - why doesn't he go to the school library, he's teaches there and has access to so much. This makes no sense to me

I agree with you and start around 11AM or thereabouts.

Enjoy St. Pat's Day

Maybe it's just me, but I would not react well to this. My 1st instinct would be to tell him to kiss my ***. The civil part of me would tell him that when his name then is on the deed of the building then he can tell what to do and when to do it.

Maintube,

I came very close to telling him to kiss my ###, this was the second time we've had this discussion. I won't be so nice if there is a next time.

He dosen't like scales, thinks they don't help much, gives me great incentive to start Hannon exercises again - I'm not crazy about scales either but feel they play a very important part in music. Bet both scales and Hannon will drive him nuts.

You mean nuttier than he already is. Scales are the foundation of music. I teach my kids that scales are what music is made of. If you know your scales, then no key will be a surprise to you. He must be a terrible teacher. Tell him I said so and he can look my 6'5" 250lb a** up.

He can't be a good composer - you said it far better than I can - scales are the foundation of music - maybe he's from another planet.
