My personal preference on writing in note names is that after the first month or so you should wean yourself off of it. I have had more than a lot of students that become dependent on the letter names to play notes. A good musician has to be able to read music without letters. That way you can focus on the rhythms more clearly. Once you have been playing the new note for a week or two you should force yourself to stop writing in the letter names and instead worry about recognizing the note on the staff. Just force yourself to do it! You'll be glad you did!
