I plan on going to college for a Music degree, and I'm wondering, for any music majors out there, how much should I know about music theory BEFORE I go to college?

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

Check out www.pianoworld.com - there are serveral threads on applying to music conservatories.

I don't know what instrument you play, but the information will be helpful. Click on pianist corner or ask the same question you wrote here. You will recieve lots of helpful advice.

Wish you the best and keep us up-to-date.

Thank you!

I focus mainly on six-string and bass guitar, but I can also play a small amount of piano (just getting back into it after about 3 years...I wish I would've kept up).

I knew zippo when I was in Freshman Theory. I managed to get a B both terms. Obviously the more you know the more prepared you are.

I think a persons success in learning music theory in college is directly related to how they learned to play music in high school and elementary school. If you are a very auditory learner and have to hear the music before you can play it properly then you will have a harder time learning the basics of theory.

If you are a very visual learner and can read rhythms and notes very well without assistance then you will likely do very well with music theory.

One great way to practice ahead of time is to download a free program called GNU Solfedge. I forget the direct link to it, but I know I have a link to it on Music Education Magic. Just go to the homepage and click the Free Downloads link in the main menu.
