Sometimes it is a matter of listening to yourself. Some people LISTEN better than others. If you listen, you can hear if you are matching pitch.
The problem is that many people never learned to listen to themselves and when other people listen to them, they tell them they can't sing. No one ever told them how to improve that by LISTENING.
Then we get into tone. When you have people out there making their millions singing HORRIBLY and our children are listening and trying to immitate that, it makes teaching them how to sing correctly even more difficult.
All this continues with the child into adulthood and we have a society of people that includes people who can't sing and don't have the proper place to learn. If they think they can't sing, they won't join a choir...if they do join a choir, someone may not have the heart to tell them they can't sing (which they could do if they learn to LISTEN to themselves...)
Just my humble opinion...

While every one has a unique voice,I would say with proper training and vocal guidance one can practice and learn to sing.
What I've discovered is that some have a voice more appealing to the ears for opera, contemporary style, then again, for others that is a BIG no!no! they may just have the right voice for those dance and pop style singing.
And then to each his own on what kind of voice stirs him/her up. Text
