The white keys are called "naturals" but some of them act as sharps or flats. The black keys function as either sharp or flat. It depends on the key the song is played in. And I'm not really sure about the . after the note. Hope I was somewhat helpful if not then I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Registered: 5/26/2004 | posted: 8/14/2006 at 12:39:39 AM ET A # means to play the named note one, 1/2 step higher. An f in the music would be f#. They are not the same note. Find a picture of a piano (they are all over the 'net). Find a note, go to the white or black DIRECTLY next to it higher and it would be that note sharp. Go DIRECTLY lower and the note is flat.
As far as I know a , or ' means to breathe. Since violins don't have to breathe it could be a phrase mark or some type of bowing.
