after 20 years or so, I've decided to start playing timpani again ( I play drum set, snare, etc..) but my reading skills are very rusty.

I'm subbing in a local orchestra playing a few pieces, including Mendelshon's
" Reformation " which has a number of confusing rests,
what appears to be a 1/2 note
rest directly next to a whole note rest, would this be counted as six quarter notes?
I asked two people in the orchestra and got two different answers. any good web sites for refreshers on reading?
