I have a few questions about recorders. I purchased one that has a book and is geared towards children. It states on the package it is a "tunable" recorder. I don't see anything in the book that explains this. I also know it is not in tune with my piano, seems to be almost a whole step below. My question is can it be tuned to the proper pitches? Also, what is the giant needle looking thing for? Cleaning? I also searched online for answers, I apologize if these are basic questions. Thanks!

Hi me again. I did find out how to tune it. You move the mouthpiece in and out until the tones match what they should be (I'm matching to a piano, but you could use any instrument you know is in tune or a pitch pipe). If just the mouthpiece doesn't tune it you can move the other pieces in and out. Thanks for telling me what the giant needle thing is, I suspected it was for cleaning but wasn't 100% sure.

Hey there. The recorder should not need tuning. They are made in different keys, and should have the proper pitch when assembled as intended. Also, in cleaning, look in the mouthpiece. You should see a block in there that can be pushed out with a pencil, or your giant needle. This allows you to clean the airways properly. This is the "block" that gives the recorder its classification as a Block Flute. Push it out from inside the mouthpiece.

The giant needle is for cleaning. However, a paper towel should NOT be used for two reasons: 1. The cloth used should be lint-free (which paper is not) and 2. A paper towel is fragile and can break off, getting stuck inside the recorder.

As far as tuning is concerned, the position of your mouth can change the pitch of the recorder. You are right - you can adjust the mouthpiece in or out (thereby making the instrument longer or shorter), as well as the other pieces, as long as the recorder is one that comes apart. The longer the instrument, the lower the pitch; the shorter the instrument, the higher the pitch.

I have heard recorders be a whole step low, just because of the position of the mouth. Another cause is not putting enough air into the instrument. Likewise, too much air can raise the pitch. A lot of air REALLY raises the pitch!!!

Hope this helps!
