I am a high school student and I play the alto sax. Over the summer I want to learn how to play another instrument. I want to play an instrument that won't be too hard to learn and is played in a high school band.
Do you have an suggestions?

Well first off do you want to stay with the saxophone family or do you want to play differnt instruments such as from the brass or percusion section. If you stay with sax I would advise the Tenor Saxophone. It's played like an alto sax,but the only difference is the key it's tuned in (Bb) as oposed to alto(Eb) If you like to try something putside the sax family I would advise clarinet for the woodwind family, trumpet for brass, and drums. Maybe drums is your best bet becuz everyone thinks their a drummer, but if you really want to try something try trumpet. The first time you pick up the trumpet you might be like uhhhhh, but after a while you'll get it and highschools use trumpets a lot due to the fact that most of the time they have the melody and they are a soprano instrument.

I find that playing bigger instruments tends to be easier. It's a good idea to stay within the woodwind family. Bass clarinet could be good, if you can rent one. Tenor sax is cool to, I playit in marching band I highly recomend it as a secondary instrument.

Oboes Rule! (but flute is ok too)

I guess I must be an oddball. I played trumpet for 5 years and when I took up a second instrument for highschool I choose tenor saxophone. To me I think woodwind instruments are easy if you have patience. Brass instruments take a lot of practice to build up lip strength. I do highly recomend the tenor saxophone if you want to go with a second instrument in a marching band. I don't recomend the baritone sax in marching band unless you have a really strong neck and thumb.
