I think the piano is the easiest instruments to play. Not only are all the note right in front of you, but you don't have to mess aroundd with fancy breathing either.

If you truly want to learn how to play any instrument correctly, it is going to be difficult. There is not a single instrument that can be mastered without putting in lots of hard work.

As far as the most difficult instrument, it is hard to say because every instrument has its own difficulties. For example, learning to play over the break on clarinet is one of its main difficulties. As Trumpetgeek stated, reaching higher pitches is difficult on trumpet, as it is on all brass instruments. Becoming fluent in all of the different bowing techniques for stringed instruments is very challenging as well. I don't think I could say what is the hardest instrument to play. It is all a matter of personal opinion.

I have been playing the horn (it isn't french!) for a number of years and haven't been having too much difficulty. However, as it has been pointed out before, the number of notes that can be played on the open instrument are far greater on the horn than on the trumpet, for example, giving one a higher probablilty of playing an incorrect note. Starting on the third space C (for the horn) it's nearly possible to play a scale (it goes C-D-E-F-G-A-B flat-C) on only the open horn. Probably higher--but my lips can't handle that!! Like all other brass instruments, you will be fatigued by playing high notes and for extended periods of time. Don't attempt both at once, FYI.

Also being a pianist, I agree somewhat that it is a fairly easy instrument to learn, but it is also difficult to play very well, as is every other instrument. Any idiot can sit at the piano and plunk out a few notes, but there exists some literature that can be played by no one short of professional training.

Alot of you may think that piano is one of the easist but as a pianist, i don't believe that's true. I've been playing the piano for about 10 years now and i still feel like an ameture compared to people that have been playing longer. i suppose that may be the same for most instruments but chords seem to be more complex than the regular brass or woodwind instrument. Also posture of your body and hands is important as well as daily practice and patience. The more advanced music you play the more your brain feels stretched or as if you can't take it anymore. True with all instruments you start with, your going to have to get used to sit in the right posture, or breathe the right way or devolp calluses to get you past the strings but after awhile that is something you don't even think about anymore. In my opinion piano may be easy to sit at and tinker with little melodies but practice and staying motivated is key, also it just takes longer to "master" than any other instrument.

Eva Hmmmm...I agree with anonymous that the piano is not an easy instrument to learn...I am a beginner accordionist and (14 months) and the piano side is just as hard as the bass side....I started out thinking this instrument would be mastered fairly quickly...wow...how wrong I was....I am guessing 3 years to get the basics down...and then ...more work I am sure....
