I'm a 4 year tenor saxophonist and I've used a Masteller mouthpiece since I've played tenor sax. I don't have any experience with other mouthpieces and I've never played a metal mouthpiece.

I own a Conn 10M Tenor Sax (made in 1952), I use #3 Rico Royal reeds and I own a Masteller #4 mouthpiece. I want a brighter mouthpiece more suitable for jazz soloing. I don't have a preference as far as the material but I'm have a $100 budget.

In response to your question, lots of jazzers use the metal mouthpieces. They give out a brighter more piercing sound. As I understand, they are pretty high costwise
Might read this article to get more info:
http://hal9000.ps.uci.edu/Does%20Saxophone%20Mouthpiece%20Material%20Matter.doc.pdf

I found price ranges from $129 to $350
