why are the groups in the orcestra called families

Because they are similar. For example, the violin, viola, cello and string bass are all string instruments, then there are the brass instruments: tuba, trumpet, trombone, etc. There are the woodwinds: flute, oboe bassoon etc and the percussion section snare, tympany, cymbals, tambourine, claves etc. The instruments in these sections are related in how they are made and played.
