I was wondering if playing an instrument is like riding a bike. i used to play the violin and viola. It was my life, I played for five yrs. I quit and havent played for like 8 yrs. do you think when I pick one up again it will all come back to me or will i have to start all over?

Welcome to the forum. To be honest I really don't play either the violin or viola, it's enough fun learing to play the piano.
But, pick up your violin and go for it. You may have to start back slowly, but it will come back with time and than you'll be on your way. This time around you are more mature and it's something you want to do and you will bring something to music you play that maybe you were unable to when you were younger.
Let us know what you decide to do.

It's no different to swimmning, and 8 years is nothing compared to those who start to play again after 30, 40 or even fifty years, and it all comes back.
Motivation beats age anytime.
..pass me that treble clef, Mildred.

You may be rusty, but, yes, the muscle memory is still there. It just needs a little practice.
