I've played (chopped) and listened to music most all my life. Last night as I was finger picking my guitar I remembered an exercise that a good friend (no longer with us) of mine showed me that relates to a roll that his Grandfather started him with as and exercise as a child. As I ridge-idly went through the motions of that exercise I realized as I struggled and fought to maintain this "roll" that I suddenly began to understand the concept or reason for my friends willingness to show me this little thing. I had been missing a part of the whole picture of what music is all about. By the way it's Blue Grass. My friends main inst. Was fiddle and he roaded with and did a lot of session work for the old legends of Blue Grass. Bill Monroe, Kitty Wells etc. Anyway I've had an experience that has knocked my boot heels off and I'm not sure where to start. I've never been cultured or had any formal training in music. I don't want to go in the wrong direction (as I set here 50 years old) as this gift that I received last night has allowed me to finally hear the music. Looking for basic pieces and parts and how their existence defines the world of music movements. I'm thinking about classical listening till I strike a calling in my heart for the thing I want to do. Now it's not a matter of what type of music but with this new found "piece" which inst. I picked up three different inst last night (fiddle, resonator guitar "slide" and reg guitar and found that at that time I could basically play all three. It was like a dream and I couldn't believe It's had happened! I'm still amazed this morning. Everything else in the world I've managed to screw up, this gift I want for keeps and to nurture it.

Grateful,
Randy
