Pagan origins? Perhaps the priest can mention the Dec 25 Saturnalia festival that, thanks to a brilliant marketing ploy by the emperor Constintine, morphed into the birth of Christ, and the Osterous spring festival that changed into Easter ( the bunnys and the eggs stayed, of course, just as the goddess Diana's blue robe stayed on all those statues of the Virgin )

Registered: 3/28/2005 | posted: 10/31/2005 at 8:44:15 PM ET Pete, that's one thing about our pastor, he does give all the origins of all the religious celebrations. The reason for using similar dates was to put the emphasis on the religious aspect instead of the secular or pagan festivals.

Registered: 3/20/2005 | posted: 11/1/2005 at 5:12:56 AM ET Thats a big plus in the present cynical climate, I think, Don, and one of the things I admire about the fact that the Seventh Day Adventist church, who run the school I teach at ( my church affiliation is Anglican, aka Church Of England, aka Episcapalian (sp?)how ever it is you people spell it...)point out the Pagan origins of church festivals.
Always, the message is the important thing, not the window dressing.

I've learned a lot about Halloween reading all these posts.
Halloween for me was and is just a day to dunk for apples and all the fun things that go along with the day and I hope all you enjoyed the day.
