The children's choir dresses in their costumes and sings for the mass. aftermass, the chil;dren parade around the block, and then the CCD teachers and the priest judge and give small monetary prizes for several catagories. Each child receives a small goody bag, and the festivities end. It's a nice day for the kids, some of whom it's one of the few days they get to church. The priest explains the origins of the celebration which is adapted from the druid pagan ritual into All Hallows Eve in preparation for All Saints Day which honors all known and unknown Saints in heaven. I was just reading an article in the paper today which mentioned that many Christians are no longer celebrating the day because of its pagan roots. Several people in our Parish have complained to the pastor, but he insists that it is in honor of saints, and is accepted by the Catholic Church. He mentions on the previous week that if people are offended, that they can go to a different mass. It is however a very well attended service in spite of the objections.

Pagan origins? Perhaps the priest can mention the Dec 25 Saturnalia festival that, thanks to a brilliant marketing ploy by the emperor Constintine, morphed into the birth of Christ, and the Osterous spring festival that changed into Easter ( the bunnys and the eggs stayed, of course, just as the goddess Diana's blue robe stayed on all those statues of the Virgin )
