Have you looked at the music of Gershwin (George and Ira)? Porgy and Bess may come to mind, but these Jewish brothers combined the best of western techniques with an overlay of middle-eastern scales, a brilliant combination. As did Robert Zimmermann (Bob Dylan), Lenard Cohan, Arlo and Woodie Guthrie, Niel Diamond, etc, etc..examine the basis of Hillbilly, and the Western/Middle Eastern mix appears.
It's a big subject.
