Porgy and Bess may come to mind, but these Jewish brothers combined the best of western techniques with an overlay of middle-eastern scales, a brilliant combination. As did Robert Zimmermann (Bob Dylan), Lenard Cohan, Arlo and Woodie Guthrie, Niel Diamond, etc, etc..examine the basis of Hillbilly, and the Western/Middle Eastern mix appears.
It's a big subject.
