I have a son that is interested in playing an instrument in his school band. He is 11 years old and in the sixth grade. We are not sure what instrument he should play. His father played the drums and I played the flute in school. He doesn't want to play any of these. Can you offer any suggestions as to what instrument will be the easiest for a beginner.

As a guitar player first and foremost, naturally I would suggest guitar (if that is an available instrument)but if it is a brass band, beter a person more familiar with that style answers.
What instruments has he tried, so far?

He has played the piano a little, but it is not in the band. He hasn't tried any other ones. He kind of wants to play the clarinet but I feel that it would be too hard.

well i play clarinet and it wasnt to hard, but i also knew how to play flute so that helped me out. if he really wants to play the clarinet i would let him try it and if he dont like it there is always more like the saxophone.

If he is interested in the clarinet, then let him give it a try. Children his age learn very easily. If he doesn't like the clarinet, he can always try another instrument. The important thingis that he develops an interest in and appreciation for music, to preserve it for the future. See the post " The Future of Art music", in the music questions forum by prof. Sy Brandon.

Well when I joined band I wanted to be a trombone player. But sadly I was too short to extend the slide so I became a trumpet player. The trumpet is a very easy instrument to play. I also play the piano, guitar, and very soon the tenor saxophone.
