When someone says eight bars it means to have eight measures prepared (a measure is when you see the little seperating line in the music)

How do I find out how many measures are in a song that I need to sing?

TO find out how many bars in a song, the general rule of thumb is that there are 4 beats in 1 bar. Therefore, count every beat as the song plays and divide by 4. Why anyone would need to know this is strange to me.
