I KNOW ALL THE NOTES ON THE FRETT BOARD OF A GUITAR.HOWEVER, I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO JUST LOOK AT MUSIC NOTATION AND KNOW WHICH POSITION TO PLAY A NOTE ON.EXAMPLE- HOW CAN I TELL WHICH E NOTE TO PLAY, THE E NOTE ON 12TH FRETT OF THE HIGH E STRING OR IT CAN BE THE E NOTE ON 5TH FRETT OF THE B STRING OR IT COULD BE ANY OTHER E ON THE FRETT BOARD.THE SAME SYMBOL FIOR E NOTE IN MUSIC NOTATION REPRESENT ALL THE E NOTES ON THE FRETT BOARD SO HOW DO I KNOW WHICH TO PLAY IN A SONG.

Most teach-yourself guitar books have a chart, called "'Notes On The Guitar In The First Position"" usually near the first chapter, which lists the notes on the staff and where they are on the fretboard...but if you want to start this weekend, and make your own note chart, then the open 1st string is the TOP space (FACE for the spaces)and the open 6th is under the third ledger line down. Then just fill in the gaps.
The E on the bottom line is the 2nd fret on the 4th string, for example.

I KNOW THE NOTES IN FIRST POSITION.FOR EXAMPLE- I HAVE A GUITAR LICK FROM ONE OF MY BOOKS. IT STARTS WITH AN (A) NOTE ABOVE THE LEGER LINE IT IS THE SAME SYMBOL FOR THE (a)5TH FRETT 1ST STRING AND THE NEXT NOTE IS A (C) NOTE 2 LEGER LINES ABOVE THE LINE. iN THE TABS BELOW FOR THIS LICK THE FRETT FOR THE (A) NOTE IS NOT PLAYED AT THE FIFTH FRETT OF THE FIRST STRING. cAN YOU TELL ME HOW AND WHAT FRETT THIS (A) NOTE IS TO PLAYED ON AND HOW YOU GOT THAT? i JUST WANT TO KNOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET THE SAME AS THE TABS FOR THIS GUITAR LICK I HAVE.

THis is the advantage and the disadvantage of TABS and notes. YOU have to determine where you play the note on the fretboard.
For example, you could play an A on the 5th fret of the 6th string, or the open 5th .. the 12th fret of the 5th string or the 2nd fret of the 3rd. The notes do not indicate which one you use, it is up to you to find the most suitable position. Certainly, when you get to the 5th fret on the 1st, you would not play lower notes on open srings or lower on the 1st but across the fretboard.
It soulds like you have a fair idea what you are doing already, it would not be hard for you to find the positions.
Remember, as long as you don't jump an octave, you are playing the same note anyway, no matter which string or fret you need to use it on to make it fit.
