Learning to sightread takes time and practice. I'm not sure if there is a faster way.
Maybe other posters with more experience than I have will pitch in with advice.
Good luck in learning to read.

thanks, good luck with your theory, what grade are you doing?if it's grade 5 then i learnt it in a couple of months.
You see, i hadn't done music at GCSE and took it on for A-LEVEL and found out i would need it for uni.The best way to learn is get a hell load of past papers. From then you can see what examiners mostly ask for, transposing, writing music...and so on. You then takle each part. I couldn't do transposing at all but i kept asking, my teacher explained it about 5 times. Practice is the way with music don't you agree?
thanks

Thanks for your wishing me luck in sight-reading but I'm a member of the Late Bloomers Club and so am not in grade level.
I hope you will learn to sight-read, it will really help you in your guitar playing. What is GCSE and A-Level, I've often wondered what A-Level meant.
Good luck in learning to sight-read

Registered: 7/2/2004 | posted: 6/11/2005 at 1:35:21 PM ET Talking about sightreading, that was difficult at first. I had been in band for two years, and I didn't know how to read the music. My flute tutor didn't even know, so I had to tell her. She didn't believe me at first, but I reminded her that every time before we played something, she would play it for me, and I just memorized it. After she learned that I was just playing by ear, we worked extremely hard, and after two more years, I became number 7 in my state in sightreading. The real lesson is that sightreading does take loads of time, but it pays off big time in the end.
Good luck on learning!

(I think that's what it's called)

Thanks again. G.C.S.Es are what i studied at secondary school after leaving primary. I spent 5 years and did 11 of them. A-Levels are like the next level up, i spent 2 years doing them and did 4, geography, media, music and business studies. They are a pain, hard work!what do you do then?education wise?are you at college?

thanks, i'll have a look for them books. My guitar teacher can sight read a little, when he teaches me grade pieces (which have music and tab on) he teaches me the rhythm through notation. But even then i find it easier to memorise what he was playing, he told me i have a good 'guitarists' memory. Can you be an instrumental teacher without having the ability to sight read? I think when you can get to the stage of working out alot of music by ear you are talented good an propper, sadly i can't do it that well yet! i think that comes with time. I think music in general just takes time. If you were stuck on a desert island with an instument (knowing middle C) and had any piece of music i reckon you could play it. What is number 7 in your state? the seventh best?
thanks
