I enjoyed your rant, Don, you said it all so much better than I ever could, and suzyq's comments took the words right out of my mouse, with apologies to Meatloaf.
The "'whole-word"' system of post-modernist reading theory has been a disaster down here in Oz, as well.
Take me to your Lieder...

I used to teach music theory. Now I've changed it. The problem with music theory is that music is experienced on a feeling level and music theory is dry and academic.
To get excited about music theory is to get excited about the possibilities of music. How does someone create that sound that makes you feel a certain way? Or evoke nostalgia? If it is in harmony, then music theory starts to make sense. How does music seem to just flow?
Giving people technical terms like retrograde inversion, tertiary harmonies, binary forms, secondary dominants, really doesn't have people feel music. Music theory can be a beautiful thing if taken out of the head and put into the context of how people experience music. quote: My teacher said that she teaches theory along with the lessons, and I'm probably getting something out of it without realizing it.
I love music and dance and a singer with a good voice. But theory - bah humbug.
