My flute tutor is making me practice my scales more now than ever, and if anyone knows me well, I hate scales. I love to play music, and arpeggios, but not scales. The only time I ever enjoyed a scale was when, and this was so cool, I was at that Lions band tryout, and all the flute players started playing their scales simultaneously. It was like a cascade of notes just came out of nowhere and washed over you like a wave. It got louder and softer too, as if it really was a wave; my flute friend (Sue) and I call it a flute wave, but I guess you kind of had to be there. It was awesome!

We need the monotny of repetition, because music is formed around the scales. The scales teach the fingering techniques necessary to perform the music properly. entire musical compositions can be built on scales. Your teacher is right on in telling you to practice the scales.

I don't mind practicing my scales because when I write songs I automatically know what key it is in and my fingers automatically go to the note I need. Being able to do that makes them all worth while.
Sure, scales are monotonous, so a good way to deal with them is to practice them differently each time. For example I practice them as 16th notes. Or I can practice them as triplets or in thirds. I am sure you could come up with different ways to practice them to avoid boredom.
Does anybody else have any suggestions as to how to make practicing scales less boring?

Toonz, Pentatonics and Modes break up the scales if you insert them at intervals.

You're welcome, the term is accurate..it really does have that effect, doesn't it..just like "'a roll of drums" or ""a skirl of pipes"'.
