Being deaf is one of the reasons why he was and is so famous. He was so knowledgable about music theory, that he knew exactly what notes could be played with other notes and what they would sounds like. Also, he could pick up vibrations from the music. It's fairly easy to tell what it feels like when 2 notes clash as opposed to 2 notes that make a lovely, harmonic chord. The vibrations of the clashing notes just, well, clash, and you can feel those screwed up vibrations. Of course, it would take lots of training. Since you and I can in fact hear, it can be difficult to imagin this.
