Click there and then click on "kinds of notes" and you'll find what you are looking for. A "dot with a stick on it" is a fairly accurate description of a quarter note for some one who doesn't understand music. The "stick" is called a stem. The difference in a quarter and half note(minum) is: think of a circle with a stem on it. That is a half note. Darken in the circle and you have a quarter note. Minum is a European(?), or maybe British terminology.
