What is the musical term for a instrument that has the highest pitch of all those in it's family?

Soprano, just like in voice.

In woodwinds the fliute/1st clarinet is the soprano. The 2nd clarinets/alto sax is the alto. The tenor sax/ 3rd clarinets are the tenor voice. The bass clarinet, bari sax is the bass voice. You have the same basic divisions in brass and strings

I've never heard of a instrument family called "sopranino". If you mean the piccollo trumpet, the Eb clarinet, or the piccolo, they just double the soprano at the octave. They are not considered a seperate voice. Instruements are the same as voices in a choir. There is no sopranino in a choir. This is from my teachers in school, B.Me. and M.Me.

You can quote all you want. The voices of an orchestra or wind band are soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. I've never heard of any instrument refered as sopranino.
