my concern is how to read bass notes?

Do you mean notes on the bass clef? The most elementary technique is memorizing "Good Boys Do Fine Always" for the bass clef lines (bottom line is G, next line up is B, next D, next F, and top line is A). For the spaces, remember "All Cows Eat Grass" (bottom space A, then C, E, and G). Does that answer your question?
