Can anyone tell me if the flute is considered a reed instrument?

No, it isn't. A sound of a flute comes when in a valve happens a vibration of air statue while a stream of air hits a sharp edge of a blowing hole.
In stead, for example, a clarinet is a reed instrument where a sound comes when the air vibrates the reed.
