How can I tell if a beat is an upbeat or downbeat. I need to be able to read music and know which conducting position to start in.

the "beat" is always the downbeat. the upbeat are the eigth notes between the beats.

The downbeat is the first beat of the measure. For instance, in a 2/4 meter, 1 is the downbeat and 2 is the upbeat!

In a 4/4 meter, the 1 is the downbeat. (i.e. 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4) etc.

Maintube and MrRon are correct, although it would really help if you tapped your foot while playing.Simple enough, foot up,upbeat, foot down, downbeat

Wonderflute,
It has been my experience that conductors do not tap their feet. A good conductor must be able to internalize the beat just as a good musician should be able to.
