My 8 yo needs to decide on a string instrument for next year/4th grade. Any pros/cons as to which one? He, of course, wants one of the "big ones" based on size only, I'd prefer another focus for choice...the options are: violin, viola, cello and bass. Thank you!
My 8 year old son wants to choose a string instrument to play in orchestra next year (4th grade). He has no experience and is leaning toward the Cello (because it's "BIG"). I would like recommendations (and why) each of these might be considered as a good choice: viola, violin, cello and bass. Thank you!

If your son is on the ;arger size he can probably handle the cello or double bass. If orchestra is like band the teacher probably is begging for those instruments anyway. Since the basic techniques are similar there is no advantage of one over another. Also consider that the school will most likely furnish the big instruments and not the small ones.

I know very few 8 year olds who possess the physical strength and stamina needed to play the doublebass. It is true that many start at this age, however their technique will always be limited at young ages due to the size of the instrument. Unless your child is tall and has arms like an ape, I would not recommend starting him on doublebass. The size and technique of the cello is much more natural and suited to younger players. Violins and Violas can usually be rented/leased fairly cheaply. I would suggest that you take the child to a symphony concert and let him hear that string family of instruments. When you do decide which instrument your child wants make sure you consult with his teacher before purchasing one. There are many instruments out there for sale that will waste valuable class time just tuning. Do not goto the pawn shop and buy the $50.00 violin without letting the teacher see it first. Many times these instruments need far too much work and will end up costing you more money.
