Please can someone explain 2 me how to know when 2 put the vertical line of a note above the dot or below.It May sound like a silly question but it would be very helpful!

If the note is on or above the middle staff line, the stem of the note goes down. If the note is below the middle staff line, the stem of the note goes up.
