Any advice for beginner. I am trying to teach myself to read music and play instrument. Is there an advantage to formal music lessons?

Nancy, I wish you well. I am a learner as well. Personally...I couldn't do it without a teacher. Different books start you off different ways and can be so confusing. I can now do the scale of G but found page 1 in a beginners book confusing. I make an effort to put aside some money each week tor 1 private lesson. I thoroughly enjoy it as the teacher answers all my questions...and I am going through the notes in a logical order. I wish you all the best.
